Famous for its warm welcome and the hospitality of the locals, the town of Ballina, County Mayo, is perhaps best known for its location, resting as it is on the River Moy. The area is a haven for fishing enthusiasts, with the internationally-recognised River Moy known as one of the best salmon fishing areas in Europe, producing several thousand salmon annually, while the nearby Lough Conn is also home to salmon and brown trout when in season. There is a rich variety of pubs, shops and restaurants available in the town and a number of historic attractions draw thousands of visitors each year, including the impressive St Muredach's Cathedral which stands imposingly on the banks of the river, plus the Céide Fields, which is the most extensive stone age monument in the world is nearby.
